Auditor-general says the multi-billion rand Covid-19 relief package landed in an environment with many control weaknesses

 

PRETORIA – Auditor-general (AG), Kimi Makwetu, today reported that the relief package
redirected by government as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, “landed in a weak
control environment”.

Dear fellow citizen

When the covid-19 pandemic reached South Africa in March 2020, government moved swiftly to provide social,health and economic relief for vulnerable citizens and businesses. A multi-billion rand emergency relief package was made available, to be spent urgently, using fast-tracked processes.The Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) was given the task of monitoring the spending of government departments and agencies involved with covid-19 relief initiatives.
